LG Cookie Wifi KM555 In Depth

Update: Selling an LG KM555e Cookie Wifi.

Just the other day I got an LG Cookie KM555 from the LG Store at SM Batangas.

LG Cookie Wifi KM555

This is marketed in the Philippines as LG Cookie Wifi and was launched with two other “Cookie” phones. But this phone is internationally known as LG Clubby.

It costs Php 7,990. Pretty cheap for a wifi phone. That’s because its lacking several features other touch-screen phones have (like 3G). Anyway, here are my thoughts on the phone in depth:

Camera. The camera is 3 MP but it has no flash and the quality is below average for me. There is also no option to turn off the shutter sound. That’s pretty dumb, LG.

Wifi. The wifi is horrendous. Its supposed to be this phone’s selling point and they did not work on it well enough. There are a bunch of useless features in the phone that they could have taken off like image and video editing to enhance the wifi experience. The wifi is so damn slow.

The wifi speeds feel like I’m using GPRS. But my access point offers up to 3mbps download speed. That’s unacceptable. Its like they put in wifi just for the sake of saying “this phone is wifi capable.”

The phone sometimes freezes when you look for a wifi spot using the Phone Status screen (touching the clock/battery icon on top). It goes to a blue screen of death (like Windows, lol) and you have to remove the battery. Removing the battery is so damn hard too!

Browsing. The built in browser is no good. Good thing it has a built-in Social Networking app with Facebook, Twitter and Myspace. If you ask me, they could have ditched MySpace and just added something else. It also has a built-in Google app which launches Google search, Blogger, Gmail and YouTube. The built in browser is slow as hell. I had to download Opera Mobile Red for a better browsing experience.

Touch Screen. Touch screen resposnse is fairly good. I got so used to my iPod Touch that I forgot that I was using a resistive touchscreen phone. But after a few days of use, I can say its fairly good. But still not as good like higher end phones like the Sony Ericsson P1i I had or the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic.

Texting. It takes a while to get used to since there is no keypad. But what I hate is the absence of the choice to not save sent items. I don’t see the use of sent items. It just clutters up phone memory (40mb for the LG KM555). And you know what happens when the phone memory gets low on mobile phones – it freezes and/or restarts. If the messaging system uses external memory, I’d have no problem with it.

Feel / Exprience. The phone also has an accelerometer for Menu, text and video usage. But the accelerometer response is also terrible. Times like these, I miss Apple’s philosphy – “if you can’t do it exceptionally well, don’t do it at all.” I find the tri-wallpaper system useless. It has a lot of this and that when all I want are shortcuts to a few things – New Message, Calendar, Music Player, Camera, Wifi and Browser – shortcuts that they can provide me in one screen.

I also hate the fact that there are extra icons on the menu and yet I can’t access all my settings in one screen. All the settings are scattered and I had to look for all the Vibrate/Touch/Tone/Screen settings one by one to get the preferences I need. I feel that they just put in additional icons to make the landscape menu screen look full and even.

I don’t like the vibrate function of phones in general. I think they just eat up battery life, that’s why I always turn them off everytime.

I also don’t like the fact that the phone does not have a slot to put in the stylus. Although its very possible to use your fingers all the time, I like to have my stylus wherever my phone is everytime so that I can use it anytime I want to.

Also take note, this phone is a full touch screen phone and the display size is 3-inches. Battery life will drain out faster compared to similar phones with smaller screens.

Music. Speakers are just ok. But when I plug it into headphones or external speakers, I hear the phone’s music shortcomings. Though it has Dolby Presets, I can’t hear the full sound quality I’d like from its stock earphones. The Nokia 3110 (a lower-class phone model) sounds a lot better with its stock earphones. The volume control is not intuitve. I have to confirm everytime I increase or decrease the volume. I just want to press up or down and that’s it. I don’t want to click OK everytime I change the volume. — I was stupid. You can actually just leave it.

What it comes with:

Software – mini CD
Phone-to-computer USB connector
Screen Protector

I really like that it comes with a screen protector and its relatively easy to install.

Display: 240 x 400 pixels, 3.0 inches, Full resistive Touch Screen
3G: No
WLAN: Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g
Bluetooth Yes, v2.1 with A2DP
Camera: Primary 3.15 MP, 2048×1536 pixels, Secondary None

But then again for well below 10k for a wifi phone, its a steal. If you’re the casual user and not that much of a tech savvy person, you might want to consider this phone if you’re thinking of buying a new phone soon.

Update: Tough luck if you’re planning to buy the phone and looking for a “shining” review of the product and got disappointed after reading this. This is my personal experience with the phone with my first few days of use. Your taste and preferences are different from mine. If you want to buy it, don’t let me stop you. I’m no expert, I’m not famous and you don’t even know me – why should my opinions matter that much to you?

Update 2: LG Cookie Wifi KM555 justified.

Every year, people are excited about making their Christmas Wish Lists. I even have my own list last year. This year, I’m making a different kind of list. I’ll make a list of the things I’ll be giving away. Yes, this will be a list of the gifts that I’ll be giving this Christmas. First, […]

Camera Purchase Update

No, I have not forgotten about buying a camera. I have just been a little busy these past few days. After careful comparison, I have decided that I’ll do for DBGadgets. I bought a cellphone and an iPod Touch from them around two years ago. Though that transaction involved a lot less money, it did […]

  1. aw! i’m planning to buy one, but after reading this, i think i’ll switch back to getting corby instead, tnx

  2. To be fair to LG, I haven’t really used the Corby so I can’t gove you a good comparison of the two.

I compared the Cookie Wifi to the iPod Touch in terms of browsing that’s why it did so bad for me. But its fairly good when using Opera Mobile Red. Do not use the Cookie’s built-in browser.

  3. hi there!

is the wifi really a crawl?
your review seems to be disappointing (planning to buy the km555..)

no 3G? gsmarena says none yet lgmobile says it has 3g..
(or km555e is different from km555?)

does the phone browser (or opera) supports flash player?
i mean, can you watch at youtube?

  4. Again, my point of reference is an iPod Touch so naturally, it does not compete well in terms of Internet browsing.

But if you use Opera Mobile Red, its very decent. Do not use the bundled browser. Its no good.

  5. worth recommending or not?

btw, did you purchase the lg km555 for review or personal use?

  6. I bought one and I’ve been using it for two weeks. The phone grows on you. I’d recommend it to a casual user. If you’re more of a techie person, its gonna leave you wanting more.

  7. Music player is “fair” at best. If you’re any sort of audiophile, stay away.

Texting is ok. But it requires some getting used to. Give it 1-2 weeks. If this is your first time using a full-touch device, it can be quite difficult at times especially if you’re a heavy texter. But just give it some time, it’ll grow on ya.

  8. Your review is just plain ludicrous, dude you can’t compare a cheap smart phone to ipod touch, that is just plain stupid, compare 2 similar products with almost identical price tag.

FYI I don’t even own the phone, just seen an advertisement about it being cheap and use the ‘intrawebz’ to see the review(how can a phone be that cheap), and seen this excuse for a review.

And don’t use the cliche’ ‘if you are a techie person…’ brah you don’t know what you are talking about, if you are a techie person you would know that there is no phone in existence that has it’s superiority in all the function’s compressed in a little device.

If you are a techie person you won’t use a phone’s camera if you want a really clear picture, as camera phone are mostly(all actually) crap no matter the price tag is.

If you are a techie person the only use you have for the wifi of a phone is when you need to check your mail and send emails on the go, techies have laptopps if they want to stay on the web remember?

For videos, I can not begin to comprehend why would anybody would watch a lengthy video in a little ass screen of a cellphone, no way.

    Music, ipod?

Of course you can all use this as a bar in grading a phone, but using the word ‘techie’… well you sounded like a poser and a douchebag. You are nothing different than those guys I’ve seen wearing ‘Tap Out’ shirts who ‘trains UFC’, big buff guys I could easily choke out.

You should have this as a header for your page: BIG POSER WARNING!!!

  9. What it would make a difference if I leave my name? Your review will still be the same and I will still have the same words, would it feed the starving children of Africa? If I leave my name are you going to believe that’s really me? Or if that is indeed my credentials and I leave my phone and address in my post are you coming for me to kick me in my arse?

This is the internet man, if you are too sensitive w/ people you don’t know criticizing you, well, you’ll spend a lot of time contemplating here, either that or don’t go to /b/ or any forums outside of your country, stick with your blog and facebook.

If my remarks are harsh and if it hit a nerve well that means that i was closer to the truth, I’m just not fond of keyboard warriors who thinks if you own an apple product or if you have gadgets coming out of your ears that you are a technical person, no… that would just mean you are filthy rich. It just makes me laugh and annoyed at the same.

  10. how long does it take to charge the battery and how long does it usually last? I’m thinking mine has a factory defect, it takes 4-5 hours for it to be full and just lasts a day. thanks!

  11. How long does it take for the battery to be fully charged and how long does it last? thanks!

  12. The same is true for me. I made the mistake of listening to the saleslady and charged it for only around five hours for the initial charging (I was busy that day too, since it was election day). Whilst I see people online talking and saying that it should be charged for like 10 hours.

Battery life will depend on usage. But bigger screen phones and touch screens consume more juice than regular phones because of, well, the large screen.

Turning off all vibrate and tone alerts will help a lot. Lower the brightness to 20-40% if you don’t use your phone much outdoors. Turn off Bluetooth and wifi if you’re not using it.

  13. on camera.. can you zoom in and out it? maximum zoom scale?
and for video.. is it good?

because im planning to buy this phone.. cause love the color of it.. haha ultra violet! just like my SE k770i

  14. @Anon 1:27 AM – You can zoom if the resolution in not set to max. If you set the resolution to 3MP, there is no zoom. Video is average – just what you would expect from a mobile phone.

    @Anon 5:41 AM – yes, it has a 3.5 mm jack for headphones/speakers.

  15. Where can I download the Opera Mobile? I tried it but it when I opened the downloaded file, it says that it is not supported.

  16. High end phones are damn so expensive, which I can’t really afford. I am planning to buy a touch screen phone which fits my budget. And Km555 is the answer to work that plan out but after reading your review, I felt worried or afraid that I might just waste my money(which is not easy to earn).

But again, we cant expect a perfect touchscreen phone with a price like this, unless a miracle would happen and end up the crisis. The thing I could do is just to make the most of what I have, what we have. After all, in the end, it doesn’t even matter.

By the way, thanks for the honest review. But I think you are not fair because you are elaborating more on the negative parts, but you never mention a good moment/positive side you had with this phone. You should have read or taken a review of this phone before you have bought it. You shouldn’t have ended complaining, wanting more, or at least sounded like a loser.

  17. hi carlo…
just got this lg phone km555 4days ago….i did try the wifi, so far so good…but when i tried the secured connection, i encountered a problem..
