LG KM555 Justified

Update: Selling an LG KM555e Cookie Wifi.

Because of the overwhelming number of comments I got, (overwhelming daw? lol, di lang ako sanay na madami nagcocomment dito, lol) I’m gonna write another post about the LG KM555. While I really don’t mind the fact that people didn’t like my review because I sounded like whiny complainer (is there such a word?), I still feel that I need to do justice for the phone. It’s actually a decent phone.

One of my biggest mistakes was setting my expectation. I had this notion in my head that since it’s a touch screen phone, it’s high-end model or at least it’s in that area. It’s not. It’s a mid-range phone. Or maybe in the upper echelons of mid-range phones. But still, it’s mid-range. You’ll find the usual stuff – camera, integrated music player, MMS / Web support.

I know I said that the Wifi is horrendous. But it turned out ok. Which is weird. I was disappointed because our (my gf and I) initial Net experience with the phone’s Internet was that terrible. We bought the same unit the same day. And we were both having problems with the Internet using the free Wifi at the mall. Take note, the free Wifi at the mall is actually very, very good and I’ve had no problems with it whatsoever prior to using the KM555 then. My iPod Touch didn’t have a problem then. When we got home, we tried again. This time with my router. Now I admit my router is pretty crappy but we were sitting not more than three feet away from the router and we were still having problems.

Weeks later, this problem went away with me doing nothing about it. It’s much better now. The connection doesn’t drop as much. And I can do something with this phone that I can’t do with the iPod Touch – stream YouTube videos! Yup, for some reason, my iPod Touch can’t stream YouTube videos. (prolly my router slowly dying and dying) But the KM555 can. And it’s pretty good. The only problem though is that it freezes on some videos. And when it does that, you have to remove the battery.

Another good thing I really like about the phone is that you can lock from any screen with one button press. I mean, even if you’re deep within the phone menu, you can lock it anytime. It’s unlike other phones where you have to exit out of everything first and return to the home screen before locking. While it may just be just a few keypresses and doesn’t seem like a big deal, it means a lot when you’re in a hurry.

Sound / music is pretty ok too. I might have spoken a little too early in my first post. I still don’t like the stock earphones (because Nokia includes much better earphones for a lower-end phone, music-wise), listening using different earphones makes a lot of difference.

This little things about the phone has grown on me. I am starting to enjoy it more. I’m even thinking of creating a blog just for the phone.

When Traditional Media Follows New Media

Of all the forms of mass media, the Internet is no doubt the youngest. For decades, newspapers, TV and radio ruled mass media. And now, with not even a decade of mainstream existence, traditional media is already learning from new media. One of the reasons the Internet is so popular is because its largely user-generated. People should buy Legit Media even if Pirated Content is available

The New Apple iPhone – July 2009.

Rumors are circulating of a new Apple iPhone for release on July 2009. It is rumored that it is going to house an OLED screen as opposed to the current LCD screen it has. This will hopefully fix the rather annoying battery life of the iPhone 3G (same problem with iPod Touch, but we are […]

  1. Yes, very much. Although I just saw the Cherry Mobile Trident. It’s also Wifi-capable and it’s just Php 6.5k and it’s tri-SIM. (yes, it holds three SIM cards) It has analog TV recording, too. SO you may want to check that out as well.

  2. @July 5, 2010 11:10 PM – I haven’t tried using the Samsung Star Wifi yet so I can’t really give you a good comparison.

  3. Whats better? cheap samsung tounch screens or this? Please tell me cause I really wanna know

  4. But do you thing LG KM555 would be worth it? I only have 8K as my budget for a wifi phone. Is it really worth it? Can you recommend something else?

  5. Yes it’s definitely worth it. As I’ve mentioned above, you may also want to checkout Trident by Cherry mobile. It has Wifi, analog tv and it can hold upto three SIM cards at once.

  6. great somebody with the same experience with the wifi. i just bought a week ago and have 24h to give it back if not satisfied…

I’m not sure if anybody here is using a mac and would like to synchronize their hundreds of contacts and calendar entries as well but I just can’t find any plugin and of course LG doesn’t care much about mac YET … ,-)

  7. nice.. this page helps me a lot. I am planning to buy LG KM555 because I really want touch screen phones with WiFi. 🙂 is there any difference between KM555 and KM555e??? what do you think is the best?

  8. i do have problem with my km555 on youtube. got message time out when its about to play the video. or if im using the opera mini browser got message gprs not support. is it with the network?

  9. @July 26, 2010 3:03 AM – with opera mini, you have to cancel on the first option. I suggest runnig YouTube while on wifi

  10. @ Anonymous, just turn the wifi on while in the mall and you can see the available wifi connection. just click on it and click connect. Bingo!
@Carlo and other viewers: KM555e is perfect. I have it for 2 weeks now and it works fine. I recommend having this phone if you are on the budget of 8k, here in Cebu its 7,500.00
I like it so much. About Cherry wifi with tri-sim, i don’t know, i just don’t like cherry since i have this cherry dual sim last december coz when you write a message, you cant write fast. every letter delays. so i don;t like cherry since then. But this LG KM555e is so cool. Sleek and looks elegant. Samsung star has embossed-like buttons, in KM555e its FULL TOUCH.
    Try this!

  11. @Sweet – It’s good but I wouldn’t say perfect. The Cherry Mobile Trident was plagued with problems when it came out.

A good alternative for this phone would be the Samsung Corby S3650W (or I think it’s S3653W) – almost the same price at 7k+ php. It has wifi and no 3G as well.

  12. I can’t make connection to the internet to the local net although all setting are right and i have sony eircsson and samsung and both thy work normal , why KM555 not work ,,,, pls help , i bought the mobile yesterday and i think i will buy it after tomorrow

  13. the local net connection i mean the dial up from mobile and also when its attached to laptop it is not work

  14. how do i update this device? i just gave this fone as a bday gift for my wife and she seems to love it.. i was choosing between an ipod nano 5th gen or this KM555. i’m glad i got the KM555. for music player its great a solid mp3 player. for wifi its just a bonus for checking mails and checking facebook nothing fancy but glad its there.

  15. hi there, can you really lock the phone from any screen? I’m wondering how to do that because i’m manually going to Phone Settings then Security then Lock handset just to lock the phone.

  16. To lock the phone from any screen, just press the power key on top. What I’m talking about is the equivalent of “keypad lock” on other phones.

  17. Hi there guys, I have an Lg cookie wifi too. When I check the phone information it says Km555 but when I look at the back of my phone it says Km555e so like most people I got confused..

Curious I tried to search the net and lg official sites. When you go to Lg Phil you won’t see results for Lgkm555e but you’ll see it on Lg Indonesia. I tried to check the specifications of both phones Lgkm555 on phil and Lgkm555e on indo, and found out that the only difference is that km555’s external memory can be extended up to 32gb while 555e’s just 8gb.

Problem now is, whether to believe the phone info or the tags at the phone box and its back label or product tag. But on the LGsites both are called Lg cookie wifi.

I enjoy using it, although, I won’t deny the fact that it has some drawbacks.

  18. I cant play youtube in my LG KM555,, it only appear loading but not buffering and it cant continue play,,, Please help me guys,,,, thanks,,,

  20. Kathleen – if you are skeptical, find someone with this phone and try the feel of it for yourself. Try watching video reviews on YouTube too.
